Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

Montgomery County Hospital Testing New Device For Paraplegics
Did You Know?

The first step in stopping climate change and reducing your carbon footprint is to find out what it is. The same basic method is used to figure out the carbon footprint of a person. This method utilizes a series of questions to figure out how many tons of CO2 are produced by your lifestyle.

There are some areas that most carbon calculators will cover. These are household, appliances, and travel. A carbon footprint can be calculated for an individual or for an entire family. The more accurate and specific the information entered, the more accurate the carbon reading will be. Some calculators for finding your carbon footprint will even include food.

How many people are living in your home? How many rooms are in your home? There will also be questions pertaining to the insulation and how much is spent each year on the electrical costs of the home. While this information is not necessary for most calculators, that results will be more accurate when it is provided.

The types of electrical appliances in the home, along with their age and energy ratings, will also have an effect on your carbon footprint. There will be a difference seen when they are left on standby versus being turned off completely. Another area involved in calculating the carbon footprint is travel. How many flights are taken during the year and how long those flights are is another factor. Do you use public transportation or your own vehicles? What is the model and gas mileage gotten from your vehicle?

How do you find a calculator to assist you in determining what your carbon footprint is? There are a few carbon footprint calculators currently available online. A few are considered to be rather comprehensive, as they even give suggestions for ways to reduce the impact that you have on the environment.

Moss Rehab is currently one of a handful of facilities around the world, and the only facility in the U.S., that are conducting clinical trials on a brand new device. The “ReWalk” is reported to give paraplegics the chance to walk again. Patients involved in the trials at the Montgomery County rehabilitation hospital are singing their praise of the device already.

The ReWalk is being tested by 12 patients, each for an eight-week period. It is estimated that the reports on the trials should be complete within about a year. The device itself consists of a harness that goes around the shoulders and waist of the patient and holds in place the leg braces that are rigged with motorized joints and high tech motion sensors. The device also includes a 3.5 hour rechargeable battery in a convenient backpack. Altogether, the ReWalk weighs around 35 pounds.

This breakthrough medical device will allow patients to stand, as well as walk again, simply by moving the upper portion of the body in special ways. The one stipulation is that the patient must be able to use their hands and their shoulders in order to operate the ReWalk.

If approved, the ReWalk will likely cost individuals a whopping $35,000.00. However, for most, that is a small price to pay to be able to regain a bit of freedom and a boost of self-esteem.
